Narked Sharks Meeting Minutes

March 11, 2008

Update of the April 19-26, 2008 Cayman Brac Trip: We have 12 people signed-up, and we will raffle one land/dive package once we are on the island meaning somebody will have a free vacation package. If you are interested, there still might be room. Contact Dave if interested. The package is as follows:

• 7 nights, 17 dives, 3 meals daily, 3 drinks daily, dive video, transfers, taxes
• $1350 for current paid Narked Sharks Dive Club members
• The March 11^th meeting was our first quarterly meeting, with the next meeting scheduled June 10, followed by September 9 and December 9.
• We discussed having a Dive Picnic on Sunday, July 20^th or July 27^th at Haigh Quarry in Kankakee.  If you are interested, please let us know. Lunch will be provided by the Club.
• LeRoy will explore the possibility of having a “pool” event at College of DuPage swimming pool. More details to come.
• The chamber dive and lecture was conducted at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital, Park Ridge, IL. The event was coordinated by Joe Garetto, and 5 dive club members participated. The fee was $20 and the dive club paid half of the chamber dive fee for Narked Sharks members. LeRoy and John also contributed another seven divers through the dive shop, give a total participation of 12 participants in the event, two of which will be traveling to Cayman Brac with the club. Narked Sharks participants included: Reed, Dave, Duane, Ed, and Joe.

• Reminder of the April 2008 Cayman Brac Trip. A reminder will be sent out to the club in the coming days.  Currently, there are 9 people signed-up to travel to Cayman Brac.
• LeRoy paid the $60 webhosting annual fee and was reimbursed.
• John Perhay gave a presentation of the new Aeris CompuMask. This is a revolutionary air-integrated dive computer featuring cutting-edge Digital Optic System technology – built directly into the mask.  The CompuMask allows a diver to keep his/her eyes focused on the dive while presenting critical dive data including current depth, elapsed time, cylinder pressure, and dive time remaining. Intuitive operating buttons allow the diver to access additional information underwater, program personal preferences before the dive and even adjust the displays light intensity on-the-fly.  The Digital Optic System provides a clear, highly magnified image of the miniature LCD, which is viewable regardless of environmental conditions and may be seen clearly by the vast majority of divers, regardless of vision.  This mask seems to be a very innovative product, with a lot of promise for the future.  While those in attendance identified some improvements, its obvious a lot of research and development has gone into the design.  If you want to be the first in your diving circle of friends to have one of these head-up display masks, see John at IID.

·                               None of the Narked Sharks officers were able to attend the meeting. Karen introduced Amy & Craig Kalas, who presented dive videos and photos from their trip to Kapalai resort in Malaysia , where their primary dive site was Sipadan.

• Welcome to new member – Bill McCormack.
• Treasury Report - $507.86 - includes membership dues paid through 7/10/07.
• LeRoy presented a 1-hour "mini-seminar" concerning basic equipment care and maintenance. He also provided lots of good information about what spare equipment you should have readily available when preparing for a dive, and how to get the best performance and longevity out of your equipment.
• Although we are waiting for the outline of the benefits of being a current member of the Narked Sharks Dive Club and shopping at IID for your diving needs, Dave and LeRoy gave some highlights such as the costs for tank fills and for attending IID picnics. Once that we receive the outline from John, Dave will disseminate the information to the dive club.

Upcoming Activity:  

• Sunday, July 22 - the Narked Sharks are planning a dive/picnic at Pearl Lake - 1220 Dearborn Ave.(Hwy 251), South Beloit , IL 61080 l (815) 389-1479. http://www.pearllak e.com/frameset. htm
  • PLEASE let us know if you are planning to be there!
  • More details next week, but we are tentatively planning on diving around 10:00 am and having lunch around 12:00-12:30.  Typically, we try to find a spot along shore on the north end.

  • Non-Divers: $9.00
• Duane has brought this interesting opportunity to our attention –
  • The Shedd Aquarium will be hosting an Underwater Photography program in November. The program consists of two class sessions, one pool session, and an actual dive in the Shedd’s Caribbean Reef exhibit.  The aquarium provides various digital cameras and related gear.  I understand there are eight spaces currently available for the Fall session, 11/10/2007 – 12/04/2007.  The brochure is included with the email distribution of the minutes. 
• The August 14^th meeting will include a presentation by fellow divers Amy & Craig Kalas. They will present dive videos and photos from their recent trip to Kapalai resort in Malaysia , where their primary dive site was Sipadan. These videos are excellent and something you won’t want to miss.
